I have close research links with the University of Western Australia and visited in May 2010. I visited many rammed earth sites in Perth and Margaret River with Dr Daniela Cianco which were recommended by Mr Stephen Dobson of Ramtec.
St Thomas More Church in Margaret River is one of the largest rammed earth projects and was completed by Ramtec in 1990 The church is open plan and features precast concrete lintels and a rammed earth tower.
Many buildings in central Margaret River contain aspects of rammed earth and Margaret River is renowned as having the highest density of new rammed earth buildings in the world. I visited the building control office in Margaret River to find out how many new homes were infact buildt of rammed earth. The majority of new building in Margaret River is traditional construction, but around 5% of new construction is rammed earth.
Cape Mentelle winery.
We visited two rammed earth construction sites in Margaret River, a new site run by contractor Giles English and an almost complete rammed earth construction site.
Dr Daniela Cianco is leading rammed earth research in Australia with Dr Chris Beckett and many masters and undergraduate students. For more information see the research page.
